Your Weaning Worries Answered - Allergens, Gagging & Choking! With Dr Shruti Nathwani - The Mamamade Podcast Episode 3
We've just launched the third episode of The Mamamade Podcast! If you haven't checked it out already, then you should probably click here to give it a listen 👀 Today, we're joined by the most amazing Paediatric Doctor, Shruti Nathwani! 👏🏼 Some of you might know her as The Children's Medic.
Meet our guest 👩🏻⚕️
She's a board-certified Paediatric doctor who strives to bridge the gap between parents and clinicians. She's a founder of a community of over 23.4k followers on Instagram and all whilst being a mother herself! We at Mamamade love her content and know sight from the offset that we had to have her on the episode.
Shruti knows first-hand just how challenging the parenting journey can be for most parents, which is why she's so passionate about maternal and paternal mental health, which directly links to the child's wellbeing! She is your go-to person for simplified, relevant information in bite-size pieces, and we all know how important that is when you're a tired, burnt-out, sleep-deprived, and overwhelmed parent looking for an answer.
We've worked with Shruti on some really helpful parenting content over on our Instagram. Did you manage to catch the Instagram video Shruti did for us on gagging vs choking? If not, check it out by clicking here.
What do we have in store for you!
This episode is full of informative tips, tricks and recommendations that we parents should all be aware of. Think of it as a mini-crash course on weaning safety. We can feel really overwhelmed when it comes to introducing solids, especially when we consider the possibility of allergens coming into play or even the techniques to use or avoid for safe weaning in reference to gagging and choking. Plus, not to mention the types of food to give your little one the amounts and the timing that's perfect for them. If you've been a little unsure about these questions, this episode is for you! Because we're diving into the discussions of allergens, choking and general weaning safety with an expert Paediatric doctor. Shruti also talks about her personal journey with allergens with her son and the day-to-day techniques that she uses to minimise mealtime risk whilst still upholding a positive weaning experience.
Did you know moments 👀
In this episode of The Mamamade Podcast, Shruti explains that around 5% of children under the age of 2 have been diagnosed with food allergies in the UK. And most commonly, these allergies tend to be cow's milk (CMPA), egg allergy, or peanut allergies.
Shruti's bit of advice 📝
I loved it when Shruti said that "weaning is a huge journey is not something that you do when their six months, and it's done! Weaning is a process, so you've got the time so, use it, space things out. And what we like to say is that when you start weaning at six months, you want to try an allergen maybe once a week, such as egg, as evidence has shown that that's a good allergen to start with! So, by spacing these allergens out, you can see which food's your little one is reacting to". This is just a snippet of the bigger picture, and there's a lot more where that came from!
I want to say a huge thank you to Dr. Shruti Nathwani for joining us and sharing her wealth of knowledge. If you are starting your weaning journey or are concerned with allergens, choking, and general mealtime safety, please be sure to listen to this episode of The Mamamade Podcast.
