How To Introduce Peanuts To Your Baby
Worried about food allergies? We hear you. The prevalence of peanut allergies has doubled in the last 10 years alone, and the prospect of introducing allergens can cause a great deal of anxiety - particularly if you suffer with allergies yourself!
The good news? The general consensus today is that the earlier you can introduce common food allergens, the better. Introducing allergens from around 6 months or earlier is associated with a lower risk of a child developing allergies by age 5.
So how can I introduce peanuts to my baby?
A simple taste goes a long way
There are a few ways you can do this! To begin with, start with a small amount (just a taste!), then wait 10 minutes for a reaction. Repeat with a second taste.
If there's still no reaction, let your baby finish off the meal at a normal speed. If your little one is going to have a reaction, it will most likely be within the first two hours.
Add a thin layer on your toast
Spread a very thin layer of peanut butter on a lovely piece of toast for your little one to enjoy.
Nutty Avocado
Create some lovely peanut dust for yourself. This is super easy if you have any unsalted peanuts at hand simply put them in a food processor and voila! For the next step sprinkle a small amount (maybe a teaspoon) over some soft and delicious avocado. It’ll be their next first food obsession!
Add some flavour to their breakfast
Prepare some yummy Mamamade porridges and simply stir a teaspoon of peanut butter into your baby’s breakfast for them to try.
Reactions to look out for
If there's no reaction, let your baby finish off the meal at a normal speed. If your little one is going to have a reaction, it will most likely be within the first two hours.
See a GP if you think you or your child might have had an allergic reaction to something.
- Skin reactions, such as hives, redness or swelling
- Diarrhoea or vomiting
- Wheezing/shortness of breath (call 999 immediately if your little one has difficulty breathing)
- Sore, red, itchy eyes
